This is when conditions like arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer are most frequently diagnosed. The key to healthy aging starts with preventing these avoidable diseases, including dementia, and I’m here to guide you through that process. The two most crucial elements for maintaining brain health are your homocysteine levels, which are primarily influenced by B vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids. Fats come in various forms, including polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, hydrogenated, saturated, and trans fats. To support brain function, the body needs beneficial fats, specifically polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, which are best sourced from fish and fish oils rather than seeds. This is because brain cells are constructed using DHA, or Docosahexaenoic Acid, an essential omega-3 fatty acid predominantly found in fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and herring.

This process of incorporating DHA into brain cell structures relies on methylation, which is dependent on B vitamins—what homocysteine levels reflect. Research shows that a combination of adequate omega-3 intake and B vitamins can lower homocysteine levels, resulting in a remarkable reduction of brain shrinkage by up to 90% and enhanced memory in individuals experiencing early-stage dementia. It’s disheartening that despite knowing this for nearly a decade, standard practices Health Canada and many other so-called Health Agencies have overlooked the fact that Alzheimer’s and dementia can largely be prevented through these straightforward measures, primarily because B vitamins cannot be patented, making them less profitable.

Forget about the focus on amyloid proteins; every drug aimed at reducing this marker has ultimately failed.

Vitamin B12 plays a vital role in this equation. Alarmingly, two out of five individuals over the age of 60 may have inadequate B12 levels in their blood, often due to poor absorption exacerbated by common medications, particularly antacids like omeprazole, diabetes medications such as metformin, and diuretics prescribed for high blood pressure. Here’s how to keep your brain healthy:

a) Aim to keep your homocysteine levels below 10, and ideally under 7. It’s crucial for anyone over 50 to get this tested. If your levels are high, consider supplementing with additional B6, B12, folate, TMG, and zinc.

These nutrients play vital roles in over 200 enzymes in the body, supporting growth, healing, hormone regulation, and stress management. If your levels are normal, ensure your multivitamin contains 10mcg of B12, 200mcg of folate, and 20mg of B6. b) Incorporate omega-3 rich oily fish into your diet three times a week, such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, tuna, or taramasalata. Additionally, consider taking omega-3 fish oil supplements that provide at least 200mg of DHA daily.
