3 Reasons Vitamin D Doesn't Accumulate Contrary To Apathetic Internet Searches

woman searching disinformation websites

Vitamin D as a singular supplement has been gaining ground and public attention over the past 20 years but many see it as another magic pill to consume that somehow performs miracles.   The fact is the oral route is the least effective for many reasons including intestinal absorption problems and unintentional cessation of usually supplements when you "start to feel better."

This is yet another example of how the general public needs to view the human body as a matrix of cellular structures that require optimal amounts on a frequent basis and Vitamin D (also known as Calciferol) has been unfairly targeted as being "toxic" in higher dosages upon Online Searches.  It seems many people look for reasons to develop apathy and develop a love affair with the medical system when they eventually reach the MD office or emergency department out of this developed apathy and lack of understanding that they need individualized assistance to dispel myths found online.

Need To Shift From Dis-ease Focus To Health Focus

It's quite sad we know more about reductionist drugs, surgeries and endless practitioner visits than do little to nothing to actually resolve health problems on a systems level.  Instead of pouring billions of dollars into scrutinizing one toxic drug after another (reductionism), we are shifting our focus towards studying each specific disease and identifying its unique cellular nutritional requirements. This approach will enable us to better understand the needs of individual diseases and pave the way for targeted systems treatments.  In essense we need to shift the research and focus from dis-ease care (sick care) to real health care.

There have been speculations that vitamin D can accumulate in our body fat and become toxic due to its affinity for fat. Moreover, there have been concerns that overweight and obese individuals who take vitamin D supplements may be at a higher risk of toxicity if they rapidly lose a significant amount of weight. However, it is important to note that the build-up of vitamin D in body fat is not a perpetual process. When there is a consistent supply of vitamin D, a balance is achieved between the stored vitamin D in body fat and its utilization in the bloodstream.

Many forget that only taking Vitamin D alone is yet again, as mentioned above, the "take this for that mindset " that we use at the MD office when we develop some kind of illness where 1 or more pills are dispensed but have many side effects that are often disturbing such as lack of sex drive, shaking and many others.  It's usually out of desperation that we take these drugs mainly because we didn't view ourselves as synergistic beings with unique cellular nutritional needs in the first place.

We don't know where to turn for help and there aren't many healthy role models for many these days in terms of a truely healthy person except the phrase "eat right for your blood type" and other meaningless buzzwords that many people repeat without thinking.  This is yet another reason out of many that there's no such thing as a "balanced diet."

The accumulation of Vitamin D in body fat has its limits. When there is a consistent supply of Vitamin D, a balance is achieved between the stored Vitamin D in body fat and its utilization in the bloodstream. Dr. Robert Heaney and his team from Creighton University conducted a study on Vitamin D storage in pig tissues. They found that groups with Vitamin D blood levels around 36 ng/ml (90 nmol/L) consume their Vitamin D at the same rate they receive it. Surprisingly, pigs given feed with over 2,000 IU/d only had a 7 to 12 day reserve of Vitamin D in their bodies. This indicates that they utilize the Vitamin D as they receive it, with no significant storage taking place. When Vitamin D intake is sufficient, a portion is stored in body fat. However, this storage gradually diminishes over time. It is not an everlasting storage solution.

It's important to debunk the notion that losing fat rapidly can lead to a sudden surge of vitamin D or any other fat soluble vitamin in the bloodstream. In fact, a study conducted by Piccolo et al. in 2013 focused on individuals who were overweight and participating in a weight-loss program. Surprisingly, even after an average total fat loss of 13%, there was no significant change observed in their vitamin D blood levels. So, it's clear that shedding those extra pounds doesn't affect the levels of vitamin D in the body.

The Role Of Vitamin K With Vitamin D

Vitamin D, a fat soluble vitamin, plays a vital role in increasing calcium levels in the body. On the other hand, vitamin K acts as a facilitator by directing calcium towards your bones. However, it is important to note that solely increasing vitamin D intake without sufficient vitamin K can lead to elevated calcium levels without effective utilization. This, in turn, raises the risk by a very small margin of calcium deposition in arteries and soft tissue, which can be extremely dangerous and potentially result in heart disease, heart attack, or stroke.  it should be noted that most of us obtain enough Vitamin K in our diets that helps to disperse Vitamin D throughout our bodies.  The real fear should be: if we take no individualized or even general advice and do not take certain supplements because of confusion, are you going to be in the Doctor's office soon for a new reductionist treatment with many and often major side effects?

To avoid such small risks, it is crucial to take these vitamins together. By supplementing vitamin K with vitamin D, the body can effectively utilize calcium to build strong bones instead of depositing it harmfully in arteries and soft tissue. In fact, vitamin K even offers a protective effect on arteries, preventing the buildup of calcium and safeguarding against cardiovascular disease.

Does this mean you need to take another supplement such as Vitamin K along with Vitamin D?  Not necessarily.  It means you should be obtaining this from the diet which most of us do, but many systems practitioners almost have an obligation to tell clients this mainly because we need to stress the fact that "band-aiding" by only taking supplements is the wrong move and that we need a more "holistic" view of the human frame.
