Psychedelic therapy's misguided approach to "mental illness"

dr hoffer dr osmond psychelic orthomolecular research

Many are starting to see increasing propaganda regarding psychedelic drugs to treat "mental illness" but many aren't aware where this research originates from and aren't aware this mindset is simply another "band aid" approach without first addressing highly potential elementary bio-chemical imbalances already present causing physical and thus "mental" problems.

Virtually all interested in the use of psychedelic drugs for "mental illness" are not aware where these ideas came from.  These men and women listed below among countless others are those who founded the basis of modern day "naturopathic medicine" but simply trying a psychedlic drug for various symptoms of "mental illness' are simply that: treating the symptoms and not addressing why someone may be experiencing symptoms such as depression, de-realization, "hearing voices," addiction and many others.

One big factor not many people know about these facts is many but mainly related to many restrictions on what "regulated" (restricted) practitioners can do, say and advertise, and hence even if clients obtain help from these practitioners but can't be treated with many simple and extremely safe methodologies due to heavy and intentional over-regulation.

Many are not aware that this approach was formally scientifically proven by extensive studies and research back in the 1950s by the team of "ortho-molecular" doctors, scientists and researchers led primarily by Dr. Abram Hoffer and Dr. Humphry Osmond of the Government of Saskatchewan.  it's used successfully to this day by the naturopathic, cellular nutrition and many other holistic fields and has for about the past 20 years become more accepted by the medical community focused on symptoms alleviation rather than root cause resolutions and restorations.  There were and are many others such as Dr. Gladys Block of UC Berkley and many others listed on the society of ortho-molecular medicine hall of fame have contributed greatly to the field.

Those who dismiss this information don't put the connections together

These same scientists, researchers and doctors are the same ones who came up with the systems biology (ortho-molecular and psychedelic therapy are synonymous!) approach listed below yet stubborningly ignore the information mainly because it doesn't have the same marketing power and history the recent push for more "band aid" approaches along with those labelled the buzzword, meaningless term of "natural."

Humphry Osmond, a pioneer in psychiatric research during the 1950s, was at the forefront of exploring the potential benefits of hallucinogenic drugs in treating mental illness. His groundbreaking studies focused on the effects of LSD on individuals struggling with alcohol dependency. As a result of his groundbreaking work, Osmond formed connections with renowned novelist Aldous Huxley and became involved with intelligence agencies such as the CIA and MI6 especially with their work code named "MK ULTRA." These agencies were intrigued by the possibility of using LSD as a "truth drug" to extract classified information from enemy agents.

“Osmond was interested in a metabolic redefinition of schizophrenia as something like diabetes,” said a former colleague, California psychiatrist Dr Tod Hiro Mikuriya.

MK ULTRA was a secret mind control world-wide experiment since the 1950s

Although many sources will contradict the above-mentioned Doctors names connecting MK ULTRA with orthomolecular medicine and psychiatry, The USA's Dr. Carl Pfeiffer was a spearhead of the project. He was conducting experiments on prison inmates in the 1960s. This is not to say the entire project or orthomolecular medicine was nefarious, but the fact remains it was funded by the CIA. Orthomolecular medicine -- the attempted modernization of health care in Canada -- was supposed to be a household word by the likes of Dr. Linus Pauling, but unfortunately never gained traction mainly due to Big Pharma's massive influence.

We have to remember the "internet" doesn't know everything while there's more disappearing on the subjects by the day while other sources are being replaced.

This is the confusing propaganda that misleads us all

There's no such thing as a "balanced diet" & nutrition isn't merely food. Why is that? It's because we're all individuals. Orthomolecular nutrition is the individualized analysis application of the substances within the food which our bodies often do not obtain enough of and are often blocked by antagonists.

"Nutrition" is far more than merely the trivial concept of food.

Botanists analyze the terrain to help plants prevent and restore cell function. Why not for humans?

What are YOUR individual cell nutritional imbalances?

Addressing cellular nutritional and toxicity problems are the first step before anything else

As the average lifespan of human beings continues to increase, the importance of addressing mental disorders becomes even more apparent. To promote mental well-being, it is recommended to include certain nutritional components in our cellular nutritional protocols (most of the time called "diet" or what goes into the mouth).  This should be done long before any though about taking prescription medication or psychedelic medications mainly because only treating symptoms without understanding why you're experiencing them is key.

These include the analysis and tissue levels of  omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids, cholesterol, niacin, folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12. On the other hand, saturated fat and simple sugar are known to have negative effects on cognitive function. It is worth noting that individuals with mental disorders often experience deficiencies in omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, which are essential for the production of neurotransmitters.

By prioritizing a personalized and nutrient-rich diet along with various substances and changes to make-up for common short-falls, we can contribute to better mental health and overall well-being. (Source: national library of medicine below)

Let's not forget these tabled lists of common "physical" conditions that poorly funded doctors and psychiatrists rarely test for before prescribing medications:

Table 1 Physical diseases with increased frequency in severe mental illness (from 15)

Disease category Physical diseases with increased frequency
Bacterial infections and mycoses Tuberculosis (+)

The clinical reality is influenced by various factors. One of the main factors is the intricate and diverse nature of mental disorders. Individuals with mental illnesses display a wide array of symptoms that encompass their behavior, thoughts, emotions, and social interactions. To simplify the diagnostic process, mental disorders are classified into specific categories with a comprehensive list of symptoms provided in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-IV), or the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Edition (ICD-11). Consequently, patients with the same psychiatric condition may present with a broad range of clinical manifestations. Furthermore, the presence of overlapping symptoms among the very wide range of cellular root causes of symptoms further complicates the task of making an accurate diagnosis based on only symptoms.

These approaches, even if using "natural substances" does not address the root causes of bodily and mind issues if we don't address the deficiencies and toxicities rampantly prevalent in thee modern human condition.  An relatively mundane and tame example of a "band-aid " solution other than medications dispensed by medical doctors would be:

  • Consuming only B complex tablets from a poor quality source without knowing if this provides that amount, quantity, formulation and frequency you need on a daily basis OR without knowing how much of it is absorbed in typical poor gut health as many people possess in this toxic age.
  • Attending massage therapist appointments that convince you psyco-somatically in a placebo fashion that something is being improved in your body.
  • Taking heart medication for anxiety situations without evidence this is needed, and this does happen in medical doctor's offices frequently.

People who promote the above and other "band-aid" or complementary solutions before addressing the following naturally-occuring substances in the body along with organ function and toxicity are performing a very great disservice to their clients:

  1. Macro nutrients & macro minerals such as: fiber; essential fatty acids; amino acids such as methionine, phenylalanine and many more.  There's also calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, manganese, zinc, sulfur, silicon.
  2. Digestive imbalances such as: low stomach acid, high stomach acid, liver/gall bladder function, intestinal mal-absorption, lactic bacteria.
  3. Excesses such as: sugar, sodium, caffeine, chlorine, fluoride, nicotine.
  4. Micro minerals such as: iodine, chromium, selenium.
  5. Fat-soluble vitamins: vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E.
  6. Water-soluble vitamins: Vitamin B1, Vitamin b2, Vitamin b3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Biotin, Vitamin B12, Folic acid, Vitamin C.
  7. Other nutrients: Choline, bio-flavonoids
  8. Toxic metals such as: aluminum, cadmium, copper excess, lead, mercury.
  9. Glandular imbalances: adrenals underactive (and overactive), gonads, kidney/bladder, pancreas, thyroid (underactive and over-active), pituitary gland in the brain, thymus.
  10. Metabolic & Systemic Imbalances such as: allergies, nervous system, circulation, hypo-glycemia, intestinal parasites, premenstrual syndrome (females), candidiasis (bacterial infection).

You can compare these are others with the following that shows the paucity of cellular nutritional testing performed by medical doctors including psychiatrists due primarily to their reductionist acute orientation and lack of systems biology training:

Once these elements & organ function & others are ruled out: then try "alternatives" such as psychedelic therapy

Once all the above including other factors are ruled out then it's recommended to try medications and other alternatives such as psychelic therapy, but it should be noted the latter therapies are unlikely to be needed on a regular basis or at all once the cellular nutritional function is optimized and other factors are ruled out.  It only makes sense not to skip or rush to reductionist and symptom-supressing substances and treatments without first addressing the cellular downstream root causes along with epi-genetic factors strongly influenced by what goes into our mouths.

We're all individuals with different work and lifestyles

It makes sense to test the above before anything else including medical doctor and psychiatric prescribed drugs doesn't it?  After all, substances in your workplace could be significantly contributing to and causing not only mental but physical problems.  Many people experience these occcurances but are often dismissed by medical doctors primarily because they don't have the support, training or funding to run systems biology examinations in a symptoms-alleviating visit.
